What really happened behind the making of Sassi (1954), Pakistan’s first Golden Jubilee film?
Released on Eid-ul-Fitr in 1954, Sassi became a landmark in the early history of Pakistani cinema. Starring Sabiha Khanum and Sudhir, and directed by Dawood Chand, the film transformed a legendary love story into one of the biggest cinematic successes of its time.
But behind the famous film was an extraordinary story.
The outdoor shooting took the film unit into the difficult terrain of Swat, where wild bears were reportedly a serious danger after sunset. The production also faced an unusual security problem during shooting near Lahore — and according to Ali Sufian Afaqi’s account, three notorious dacoits were eventually brought in to protect Sabiha Khanum and the film unit.
