Ribblehead Viaduct: 24 stone arches carrying 402 metres of railway across a Pennine bog, reaching 31.7 metres above the valley floor, on foundations dug by hand as much as 7.6 metres through peat and clay to reach limestone. Every sixth pier was built at roughly three times the thickness, so that a failure anywhere in the run destroys five arches and then stops. It opened in 1875, and it exists because Parliament refused to let the Midland Railway abandon a line it had already asked permission to build. This documentary covers the full engineering and construction process, from the reason peat is the worst material a foundation engineer can be handed, to the steam pumps that had to run day and night to keep every excavation dry, the thrust that makes a row of arches behave like a chain, the king piers that stop a progressive collapse a century before British codes had a name for it, the timber centring struck 24 times, and the limestone quarried from the ground the viaduct crosses. Why a viaduct this size stands in one of the emptiest valleys in England. Why the waterproofing failing on top nearly closed the whole route in the 1980s. What the memorial at Chapel le Dale records about the cost of building it.
