Interview date: May 2019 Gary Bensman is widely regarded as one of the most respected and experienced steam locomotive mechanics and boilermakers in the United States. With a career spanning over four decades, Bensman has dedicated his life to the restoration, preservation, and operation of historic steam locomotives, helping to keep America's rich railroad heritage alive for future generations. A native of Ohio, Bensman began his journey in railroad preservation in the mid-1970s, developing a deep knowledge of steam technology through hands-on experience. He quickly became known for his exceptional craftsmanship, meticulous attention to historical accuracy, and innovative solutions to the complex challenges of restoring century-old machinery. Bensman’s work has taken him to railroads and museums across the country. He has played a central role in the overhaul and rebuilding of numerous iconic locomotives, including Nickel Plate Road 765, Pere Marquette 1225, and Frisco 1522, among many others. His skill set includes riveting, flue installation, firebox fabrication, and a broad range of welding and machining expertise—skills that are increasingly rare in the modern age. In addition to his mechanical work, Bensman has contributed to the education and mentoring of the next generation of steam craftsmen. He is a co-founder of Diversified Rail Services, a company that provides professional restoration services for steam locomotives and vintage rail equipment. His leadership has made the firm a go-to name in the field of railroad preservation. Known for his no-nonsense approach and deep reverence for the past, Gary Bensman is more than a skilled tradesman—he is a living bridge between the golden age of steam and the present-day heritage movement. His work continues to inspire railfans, historians, and preservationists alike, ensuring that the sights, sounds, and smells of steam railroading endure on the American landscape. In early 2025, Gary suffered a serious health crisis, experiencing a major heart attack followed by complications, including a stroke. He underwent emergency cardiac surgery and spent several weeks on a ventilator. Though his recovery is ongoing, his resilience and determination remain strong. The preservation community has rallied around him, offering support and assistance during his time of need. Help support Gary's healthcare expenses here: https://gofund.me/1d723801
