Max is broke. Rent is due in 3 days, his bank app says £4.12, and his job interview ends with "we'll call you." Walking home through the park in a storm, he gets struck by lightning. He wakes up in hospital and hears the nurse say "good morning"… and then hears what she's thinking. Her lips never moved. At first it's a nightmare: a whole hospital of thoughts at once. Then he uses it. He nails his next interview by hearing the questions before they're asked, finds out which friend secretly can't stand him (and why), and discovers that his gym-bro best friend thinks about sandwiches 90% of the time. But there's one person he can't hear at all: his girlfriend, Lila. Her head is completely silent. The real science behind it: • About 9 in 10 people struck by lightning survive. A bolt carries around a billion joules, but it lasts a fraction of a second and most of it flashes over the skin • The fern-shaped marks lightning can leave are called Lichtenberg figures, and they fade in a few days • Scientists estimate a person has about 6,000 separate thoughts a day • Your brain runs on tiny electrical signals, about 20 watts, like a dim lightbulb • In 2023, scientists used brain scans to roughly decode the words people were imagining • Some people have little or no inner voice. It's called anendophasia: they think in pictures and feelings, not sentences • The cocktail party effect is why you can pick out one voice (or your own name) across a noisy room Mind reading isn't real (yet). Please don't stand under a tree in a thunderstorm.
