At Porsche Design Tower, a glass elevator carries cars toward private apartments above the Atlantic. But researchers were investigating a different kind of movement — one that unfolded across years.
A 2024 University of Miami-led study examined coastal subsidence along Florida’s barrier islands. At Porsche Tower, two satellite records raised a question: were they seeing the same movement from different directions?
We follow the evidence through interbedded sand and limestone, neighboring construction, proposed creep and groundwater mechanisms, and a later technical proposal exploring vertical and westward motion. The key is separating observations from proposed explanations.
The approximately 8 cm vertical and 7 cm westward components discussed here are a preliminary interpretation of historical observations. They are not a current sinking rate or a forecast of collapse. Surfside is a different building with a different investigated failure sequence.
