Depression-Era Christmas Baskets: Grandma's Rules for Giving
My grandmother Lena wrote “Baskets” at the top of a notebook page, with five visiting rules below. Why did she underline the one about January twice?
Christmas can be quiet when you live alone. People care, but knowing how to help isn't always easy. I'll open Lena's page of Depression-era Christmas baskets and show what still works—and what I change today.
From bread, butter, eggs and jars, to the neighbors on Lena's list, coffee, light, heat, stamps and a little luxury, then her visiting rules and the first basket—each part shows how giving can preserve dignity.
We'll also cover refrigerated eggs, pressure-canning green beans, and when to request a welfare check.
And stay for the end — I'll tell you who brought the first basket into this kitchen, before Lena began.
If you've ever dropped off supper, tucked a treat into a gift or wondered whether to knock, this video may change the way you see it. You're in good company. I've done a few of these myself.
I'm Della Prosser, third generation on the same ground in central Nebraska, and I keep our family notebooks. I check the old advice against today's safety guidance.
🧺 Who carried Christmas baskets on your road? Tell me in the comments — and share their name and one thing they packed.
