October 1942. German spy planes photograph the British lines at El Alamein: trucks in the north, a half-built water pipeline in the south. Every picture was a lie. The trucks were tanks, the pipeline carried no water, and the attack came in the north.
This episode breaks down three battles Bernard Montgomery had largely won before the first shot was fired: Operation Bertram, the deception plan behind El Alamein in 1942; the left hook through the Tebaga Gap that turned the Mareth Line in 1943, on a route scouted weeks earlier; and Operation Plunder, the 1945 crossing of the Rhine hidden behind a huge smoke screen, with the airborne landings coming after the river assault, not before.
So which move do you rate highest — the fake army at El Alamein, the left hook at Mareth, or the smoke over the Rhine? And is patience a kind of genius?
