Sonata in E-flat major WoO 47 No. 1 by Ludwig van Beethoven, performed on a replica of a 1788 Johann Stein fortepiano, with sheet music. Born in Bonn in 1770, Ludwig van Beethoven became one of history’s greatest composers, widely known across Europe and held in high esteem by his contemporaries. His encounters with fellow composers such as Mozart and Rossini are famous. A gifted improviser, Beethoven gained recognition in Vienna by winning countless improvisation contests against other virtuosos. The best-known opponent was Steibelt, who fled their contest and shunned Beethoven for the rest of his life. Beethoven was also instrumental in the shift from the late Classical period to Romantic music: he developed the Viennese-style piano sonata and made major advances in the structure of the symphony. Though Beethoven died in 1827, his legacy continued through Czerny and Czerny’s pupil Liszt. This piece is one of Beethoven's first pieces, written in the early 1780s. The style is Classical with influences from Mozart.
