In this powerful reminder, Sheikh Abubakar Sidiq Suleiman Babanzaria, popularly known as Babanzaria, discusses the relationship between practicing the Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ and the strength of one’s Iman. Sheikh Babanzaria emphasizes that, according to his message, as a person gradually decreases in practicing the Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ, their level of Iman can also decrease. To illustrate his point, he asks the congregation how many people could willingly stay without sleep for several nights simply out of love for the Prophet ﷺ and a desire to follow his example. He contrasts this with the advice people commonly receive from doctors about the importance of getting sufficient sleep and rest. He explains that while people may readily follow medical advice concerning sleep and their health, they may find it difficult to make similar sacrifices when it comes to practicing the Sunnah. The Story of Sheikh Ibrahim Saleh Al-Husseini Sheikh Babanzaria then narrates a story he says was related to him by Malam Ibrahim Yola concerning Sheikh Ibrahim Saleh Al-Husseini. According to the account, Malam Ibrahim Yola once asked Sheikh Ibrahim Saleh Al-Husseini when he last slept, referring to the demanding nature of his activities and devotion to religious work. Sheikh Babanzaria says that, according to the story narrated to him, Sheikh Ibrahim Saleh had gone for a very long period with very little sleep. He uses this account to highlight the extraordinary sacrifices that some scholars and devoted servants of Allah have made in their pursuit of knowledge, worship, and service. He also mentions an account concerning Sheikh Ibrahim Niasse, saying that Sheikh Ibrahim Niasse was reported to have taken only a short period of rest within a 24-hour period. Through these examples, Sheikh Babanzaria encourages his audience to reflect on the level of dedication and sacrifice demonstrated by some of the scholars and righteous people of the past. On Marriage and the Sunnah Sheikh Babanzaria also addresses the women in the congregation, encouraging them not to prevent their husbands from following the Sunnah concerning marriage. He specifically refers to the Islamic allowance of marrying up to four wives and presents it as part of the Sunnah, while emphasizing the need to understand and practice marriage within the conditions and responsibilities prescribed by Islam. A Wird for Those Facing Difficulties Towards the end of the lecture, Sheikh Babanzaria introduces a spiritual practice that he attributes to Shaykh Ahmad al-Tijani for someone facing a serious burden or difficulty and seeking Allah’s relief. According to his narration, the practice consists of: Ṣalāt al-Fātiḥ — 100 times Yā Laṭīf — 1,000 times Ṣalāt al-Fātiḥ — 10 times He advises that after completing the first 100 Ṣalāt al-Fātiḥ, the person should state their intention and ask Allah for what they need before proceeding with the remaining portion of the practice. He explains that someone facing a particularly heavy difficulty may perform the practice more frequently, including after the obligatory prayers, while someone facing a lesser burden may perform it in the morning and evening. Sheikh Babanzaria also shares testimonies from people around him who, according to his account, practiced this wird and experienced relief through the mercy and power of Allah. The lecture therefore touches on the Sunnah, Iman, sacrifice in worship, the lives of Islamic scholars, sleep and devotion, marriage, Dhikr, Ṣalāt al-Fātiḥ, Yā Laṭīf, and seeking Allah’s assistance during times of hardship.
