Happy Navratri! Navratri ("nine nights") is one of India's biggest festivals, celebrated by millions of families in India, the USA, the UK, Canada and all over the world. Each night honours one of the nine forms of Goddess Durga. Why do we celebrate? Long ago the demon Mahishasura troubled the whole world, and Maa Durga fought him for nine days and nights and won on the tenth day (Dussehra / Vijayadashami): the victory of good over evil. On Day 7 we meet Maa Kalaratri, the goddess who chases away darkness and fear.
On Navratri Day 7, little Veer is the family's very own night guard, but he is a bit scared of the dark. Then a power cut hits just before the all-night jagrata. Dadi tells the gentle story of Maa Kalaratri, the kind goddess who ends darkness, and Riya and Veer share one diya's light from door to door until the whole lane glows. Their lonely neighbour Kamla Nani gets to come too. Along the way kids learn what Navratri and jagrata mean, why we touch elders' feet, and why gud is offered to Maa Kalaratri, and they see that being brave means walking on even when you feel a little scared.
Watch the whole Navratri series with Riya & Veer: a new episode for every day of Navratri (11-19 October 2026), each with the story of that day's goddess. Perfect for kids aged 3-8 learning about Indian festivals, Hindu culture, garba, dandiya and Durga Puja traditions. Jai Mata Di!
