An owl hoots to tell other owls “this is my patch, keep out!”, and to call to its mate, and lots of owls are awake at night, so that’s when they hoot. Not every owl hoots: a barn owl screeches! Twit-twoo is usually two owls talking: one, often the girl, calls “ke-wick” and another, often the boy, answers “hoo-hoo”. Owls hoot most in autumn and winter, when pairs get ready to nest and young owls look for homes. Cool night air carries sound far, and low, deep hoots travel further than high sounds. Try it: cup your hands and blow across your thumbs to hoot, and listen for owls after sunset with a grown-up. If you find a baby owl on the ground, don’t pick it up: tell a grown-up.
