"Go and Keep the Old Dancing Master Company, No One Will Miss You" - The Duke Sat Down Beside Them

Regency historical romance, narrated in full. "Go and keep the old dancing master company. No one will miss you." That was what Mrs Selwyn said to her niece at the county assembly, loud enough for the two nearest families to hear. Margaret Aldous was 29, kept at home to nurse a sick mother, and asked to dance by no one in 6 years. She did not answer. She crossed the room and sat down by the door beside old Mr Fenwick, the lame dancing master the county had long since set aside. For 4 winters Margaret had spent her assembly evenings with him. She told him what the band was playing. And where no one troubled to look, the old master had taught her, beating the time on the arm of his chair, every dance she was never once asked to stand up for. She thought she was being kind to a broken-down old man. She had no idea who the old man by the door really was. 40 years ago he had taught half the county to dance. And 30 years ago he had taught a frightened boy of 8, who was about to walk into that assembly as the richest, most sought-after man in England.
