Why the single leg reverse lunge is one of the best exercises for hip stability, stronger glutes and moving better in everyday life.
HIP STABILITY
As you step back, your front (stance) leg takes most of your weight and has to keep you balanced. That challenges your glute medius (the muscle on the side of your hip) to provide rotational stability. It keeps your pelvis level and stops your thigh from rolling in and your knee from caving inward, so the ball-and-socket hip joint stays stable and centred where it needs to be.
GLUTE ACTIVATION
Stepping back drives your centre of mass (COM) behind you. Your hips sit back, your front shin stays more upright, and that puts heavy emphasis on the glute of your stance leg. It's also why many people find reverse lunges easier on the knees than forward lunges.
WHY IT MATTERS
Walking and climbing stairs happen one leg at a time, and getting up off the floor uses this same pattern. Build strength and control here and everyday movement feels steadier and more comfortable.
KEY CUES
• Step straight back and lower your back knee toward the floor
• Keep your front knee in line with your toes — don't let it cave in
• Keep your hips level and let them sit back as you lower
• Push through your front heel and midfoot to come back up
