Did Hassan Jihad Ibn Kariem pass out before his restraint came loose on the Goliath roller coaster at Six Flags Over Georgia? A new eyewitness account from the 13-year-old seated beside him has sharpened the central question in this fatal roller coaster accident—but investigators have not confirmed that sequence or established the cause of his death.
On October 12, 2026, 42-year-old Atlanta educator Hassan Jihad Ibn Kariem was ejected from Goliath during a family visit to celebrate his niece’s birthday. He died, and four other young riders were injured. Hassan was remembered as a devoted educator and robotics coach. His family is still waiting for answers.
In this documentary, Spotlight Crimes examines what is known, what remains unverified, and why the details matter:
• The eyewitness account: Hassan’s family says his 13-year-old niece told relatives and a Cobb County detective that he appeared to lose consciousness before the restraint released. This is a family-reported account—not an official finding.
• The lap-bar restraint: Goliath uses a lap-bar system. We explain the possible questions investigators must examine, including the restraint’s condition, fit, operation, and whether a medical event played any role.
• A reported restraint concern earlier that day: Erica Billups told the Associated Press that her children encountered a problem with a restraint on a Goliath seat about an hour before the fatal incident. That report has not established a connection to Hassan’s seat.
• The March inspection: Georgia officials said Goliath’s March 16, 2026 inspection recorded no violations, deficiencies, citations, or red tags. A prior inspection does not by itself establish the condition of a component on October 12.
• Similar coaster closures: Several similar roller coasters were temporarily taken out of service for precautionary reviews. A precautionary closure is not proof that a defect caused this death.
• The unanswered questions: What caused Hassan to lose consciousness, if he did? Did the restraint function as intended? What will the medical findings, maintenance records, and physical examination show?
We also revisit the 2006 death of Michael Corry on Goliath as historical context—not proof of what happened to Hassan. The cause and sequence of Hassan’s fatal fall remain under investigation. We will not present an allegation or an eyewitness recollection as a confirmed conclusion.
LATEST VERIFIED CONTEXT
Georgia’s safety regulator said on October 15 that Goliath remains secured while officials review inspection, permitting, and incident records. The park has reopened, but Goliath remains out of service pending the state investigation. News reports have also described a same-day restraint concern and the temporary closure of similar rides. These facts are leads and context, not a finding of cause.
