Trace length is the part of a popping rig most anglers never think about, and it quietly decides whether you get bitten or ignored. In this video we work through how to match your trace to the water you are fishing.
The principle is simple once you see it. In deeper water you want a longer trace, because the fish, and the big barbel in particular, are holding closer to the bottom, and the extra length lets your bait move naturally right in the strike zone. In shallow or soft water a shorter trace works better, because a long one lets the bait sink and lie on the bottom where the fish may simply ignore it. In that water they are cruising nearer the surface, so your rig needs to present there.
We fish two setups in this video, traditional catfish heads and active poppers for surface action. Both of them catch fish. The difference is getting the trace right for the depth you are working. If you fish rivers and dams like the Vaal and Bloemhof Dam, this one is worth your time.
This video is in Afrikaans with English subtitles.
