How strong is gravity in Super Mario Bros.? I measured Mario's jumps frame by frame, calculated his acceleration using real physics, and then compared my results to reverse-engineered game code. The problem? Mario gave me different answers depending on whether he was moving up or down. So I dug into the code to figure out what was actually happening, and found that Mario's jump is much stranger than a simple constant value of gravity. By the end, we can even estimate how Mario's gravity compares to gravity here on Earth.
