Jimmy Page ATTACKED David Gilmour on Live TV — David's Response Silenced 30 Million People
November 1986. BBC Two. Sound and Vision.
Roger Waters had sent his letter eleven months earlier. The letter that said Pink Floyd was over. That what remained without him was a very good car with no engine.
Now David Gilmour was on a live talk show sofa. And sitting at the other end of that sofa was Jimmy Page.
Neither of them had known the other would be there.
The host asked Jimmy to weigh in — Led Zeppelin had been through this, losing the irreplaceable person. Where did David go from here?
Jimmy Page looked at David and said it plainly. The engine was gone. Roger was the architect. What remained was beautiful execution without a vision. A very good car that wasn't going anywhere.
The studio went quiet.
The cameras stayed on David.
He picked up his glass of water. Held it. Set it down.
Then he said something that nobody in the studio was expecting.
He said: "That's an interesting thing to hear from a man who knows what it's like to lose the irreplaceable person."
Jimmy Page went still.
But that wasn't the part that silenced thirty million people. That was just the comeback.
What came after the comeback is the reason Sound and Vision is still discussed in music television circles forty years later. Because what David said next wasn't about Pink Floyd. It wasn't about Roger. It wasn't about the argument.
It was about Syd.
📺 In this video — the green room, the sofa, the car-and-engine metaphor, the comeback, the six words about Syd Barrett, and why Jimmy Page said something so quiet the sound engineer almost missed it.
