One morning, David Gilmour came downstairs and found a newspaper on the kitchen table.
The article wasn't cruel. That's what made it worse.
It was measured. Fair. It gave full credit to everything he'd done. And then it arrived at the present tense and suggested, carefully, that time had done what time did — and what remained was the legacy, not the thing itself.
He read it twice.
He set it down.
He made his coffee.
A few days later, he submitted a name — not his own name — to an open guitar audition in West London. He wore a hat. He wore glasses. He signed in and sat in the waiting room with his guitar case between his feet and nobody recognized him.
Then the door to the audition room opened.
One of the three people on the panel was the journalist who had written the article.
He didn't leave.
He walked through the door. He sat down. He played for eight minutes. And then — only then — he reached up and took off his hat.
