ASL slang can pack a LOT of information into a single expression. 👀
Meaning, emotion, connection, attitude, and cultural nuance can all be communicated through slang. For Deaf people, using ASL slang can feel completely natural, but accurately interpreting that slang into English can be challenging.
In this video, I talk about why interpreters need a strong understanding of ASL slang, especially when voicing from ASL to English. It isn't enough to recognize what was signed. You have to understand what the slang means within context, how it was presented, and what feeling or nuance the Deaf person intended to communicate.
Sometimes that may require adjusting your tone of voice. Other times, you may need to expand on the concept to provide an equivalent interpretation. Simply skipping over the slang can mean leaving important information out of the message.
And this isn't an easy skill to master. Interpreters are receiving signed information, processing its meaning, and producing spoken English simultaneously. Recognizing ASL slang and understanding how to convey its full meaning requires knowledge, cultural competence, and experience.
I encourage interpreters to self-assess their understanding of ASL slang. How comfortable are you recognizing it? More importantly, can you accurately interpret the meaning, feeling, and nuance behind it?
ASL slang deserves more respect. 😏
And considering how few opportunities there are to formally learn about ASL slang, maybe my sister and I need to create a course or workshop. We just might. 👀
