Ever lost your way on a hike and found something amazing instead? Well, that’s exactly what happened to us at the Snow-Leopard Cave in Mustang! So, picture this: we were on our way to the stunning Dhumba Lake, trekking through the picturesque Thini village. Suddenly, we took a wrong turn—classic! But instead of turning back, we decided to follow a trail that led us straight to the Leopard Cave, or as locals call it, Lhakkum. At 2,900 meters above sea level, this cave is not just any cave. It’s been a sacred space for centuries, alternating between being occupied and abandoned. Legend has it that the famous monk Urgen Palsang once meditated here. Can you imagine the wisdom that’s echoed off these walls? Inside, we found a small meditation room, still intact. It felt like stepping back in time! But that’s not all; while exploring, we even stumbled upon another cave that was discovered during the construction of a side trail. Talk about a hidden gem! The area around Thini village is also a crucial habitat for rare wildlife, including the endangered snow leopard. In fact, researchers have already captured video footage of four snow leopards roaming free! How cool is that? So, while we may have strayed from our original path, our adventure to the Leopard Cave turned out to be an unforgettable experience. Not only did we learn about the cave’s history, but we also felt more connected to the breathtaking nature surrounding us. If you’re ever in Mustang, don’t miss the chance to explore this incredible cave.
