2 hours of dark Japanese taiko for a duel on a bridge at night — mist off the river, one enormous warrior monk who lets nobody past, and a small opponent who is not worried. Starts quiet in an empty capital, builds into full-force drums on the boards, and ends walking away together. No repeats, no loops, one continuous two-hour set.
The frog has taken nine hundred and ninety-nine swords on this bridge and has them bundled on his back. The rabbit has a short sword and a folding fan, and intends to use the fan. Neither of them has raised their voice. The frog already suspects how this ends, which is why he is taking his time.
⚔️ About Gojō Bridge: Benkei, a warrior monk of enormous size, vowed to take a thousand swords and stood on the bridge each night to collect them. The thousandth belonged to Ushiwakamaru — later Minamoto no Yoshitsune — a boy small enough to be dismissed, who moved so lightly that the naginata never touched him. Benkei lost, swore himself to him on the spot, and followed him for the rest of his life.
🐰Artwork inspired by Chōjū-giga, Japan's 12th-century scrolls of frolicking animals — often called the world's oldest manga.
