In the mountains of central Slovakia stands a mint that has been producing coins since 1328, and the land around it once made this small corner of Europe one of the richest places on the continent. Most people couldn’t point to Slovakia on a map. They have no idea what lies beneath it. In the Middle Ages, its gold and silver mines at Kremnica and Banská Štiavnica supplied a huge share of Europe’s precious metals, and in 1762 Banská Štiavnica opened one of the world’s first mining academies. Today, Slovakia sits on some of Europe’s richest magnesite deposits, more than a thousand mineral springs, and beneath its southern plains lies one of the largest reserves of drinking water in Central Europe. In this video, we explore why Slovakia may be sitting on some of the most valuable land in Europe: the medieval gold that built empires, the mint that never stopped working, the minerals and waters hidden in its mountains, and why the world has almost forgotten how rich this land once was.
