Khalifa, 39, was known for hosting “Mission Impossible,” a programme focused on crime and security issues. According to Egyptian state-linked media, prosecutors accused the defendants of forming an organised criminal group to obtain materials used to manufacture synthetic drugs for trafficking, as well as possessing unlicensed firearms and ammunition. More than 750 kilograms of narcotics and related materials were reportedly seized. The case took an unexpected turn because Khalifa strongly denied the allegations. Reports say she made an emotional plea in court after the death sentence was announced, while her lawyer has indicated that an appeal will be pursued.
