Hartshill Castle

A beautiful film made and produced by John Stringer in association with Nuneaton Local History Group on behalf of Jean Lapworth for her Hartshill Castle project interviewed by Peter Lee, local historian. On her retirement as a much loved teacher at Higham Lane School, Nuneaton, Warwickshire, Jean and her brother Harold set out to contribute to conservation in their local area. They purchased the Abbey field in the centre of Nuneaton which remains as an untouched wildlife haven in the middle of a busy built up town centre, and when the medieval castle at Hartshill was put up for sale Jean decided to buy it. Not in the hope of completely rebuilding it as that would be almost impossible with Jean's limited resources, but to conserve it, and to retain its heritage and unique setting. To preserve and repair the curtilage and facilitate its future as a haven for wildlife for future generations to enjoy. Jean is aided by her hard working and faithful stonemason Joe who loves the castle as much as Jean does. I hope you enjoy listening to Jean. One of England's great characters.
