Seth Spears used to insist on being profitable off the first sale. Now, he says, Wellnesse usually loses money on a new customer's first order, breaks even in month two and turns a profit in month three. He's candid that it's early: they hadn't reached day 90 on the new model when we recorded.
In episode 3 of the Profit Playbook Podcast, Mallory Smith, Head of Client Success at Data Driven, sits down with Seth Spears, founder of Wellnesse and Spears Marketing, to talk about audiences, subscriptions and the data behind a DTC oral-care brand.
We get into:
• Why having an audience before the product mattered most when launching Wellnesse
• Where Seth would build an audience today, and why he wouldn't launch a health brand now
• Moving from "profitable on the first sale" to a subscription that pays back by month three
• What gets reviewed with the ad agency every week
• Using reorder data to cut whole product lines
• Shopify vs. WordPress, and why simplicity scales
