In this Hindi philosophy lecture, we explore Avicenna’s (Ibn Sina’s) metaphysics and his major contribution to Islamic and medieval philosophy. The lecture begins with Avicenna’s study of Aristotle and introduces key Aristotelian concepts such as substance, form, matter, essence, causation, potentiality, and actuality. We then examine Avicenna’s central distinction between essence and existence and why he believed Aristotle had overlooked the independent philosophical problem of existence. The lecture explains Avicenna’s three categories of being: Necessary Existent (Wajib al-Wujud), Possible Existent (Mumkin al-Wujud), and Impossible Being. We also explore his famous Proof of the Necessary Existent (Burhan al-Siddiqin), his response to infinite regress, and his argument from contingent beings to God. Finally, we discuss Avicenna’s understanding of God, the eternal universe, creation, and divine knowledge, and how his metaphysics differs from Aristotle. This lecture is useful for students of philosophy, Islamic philosophy, medieval philosophy, metaphysics, and anyone interested in understanding Avicenna’s philosophy in a clear and accessible way.
