Al-Ghazali: Life, Skepticism, Philosophy & Intellectual Independence in Hindi

In this lecture, we explore the life, intellectual journey, and philosophy of Al-Ghazali (Imam Al-Ghazali), one of the most influential thinkers in the history of Islamic philosophy and theology. We begin with Al-Ghazali’s early life and education, his intellectual crisis, and his search for certainty. We then examine his ideas about conditioning, belief, knowledge, skepticism, and the limits of human knowledge. A major part of the lecture focuses on Al-Ghazali’s famous dream argument, his doubts about the reliability of the senses and reason, and how he eventually escaped his skeptical crisis. We also compare Al-Ghazali’s skepticism with René Descartes, including the question of possible intellectual influence between the two thinkers. The lecture then turns to Al-Ghazali’s views on philosophy and his critical engagement with philosophers such as Al-Farabi and Avicenna (Ibn Sina). We discuss his approach to philosophical knowledge, intellectual authority, hero worship, blind following, cancel culture, and independent thinking. Rather than accepting or rejecting an entire thinker or discipline, Al-Ghazali encourages us to examine individual arguments and ideas carefully.
