Technical Talk 3: on "It shouldn’t happen to an Expert!" by Nick Russell Nick Russell Nick is a former president of the IStructE and for the last 30 years has acted as an expert witness in a variety of cases both in the UK and overseas. He has given evidence in mediations, adjudications, arbitrations, and court cases and has twice been recognised as Lawyer Monthly Expert of the Year. Nick has considerable experience in many areas of structural engineering and particular expertise in urban regeneration and the adaptation and modernisation of existing buildings; practicing embodied carbon reduction long before it was recognised as an essential part of a structural engineer’s work. Nick is a Consultant Perega Ltd and its subsidiary companies Perega Innovations, and Perega Clear Structures. He holds visiting professorships at the Universities of Surrey and East London and is a past Chair of the Joint Board of Moderators and also the IStructE’s Professional Practice Committee. Nick is a regular offshore sailor, a keen cyclist and photographer and an accomplished squash player, all of which are activities that he enjoys in his spare time. In his talk Nick will look at what inspired him to become an Engineer and then some of the cases on which he has advised and will draw out the lessons that we can all learn from things that have not gone as planned. He will then look at the rules of being an Expert and conclude with some advice on staying out of trouble in the first place.
