Free watercolor moth painting lesson for kids — a directed-draw nature project from Blackwing Foundation's 4th Grade Pathway, designed specifically for fourth-grade students. Standards-aligned, runs about 32 minutes start to finish.
In this free art lesson, students learn to paint delicate watercolor moths inspired by Australian contemporary artist Allyson Reynolds. Kim is joined by her daughter Lily as they walk students step-by-step through preparing the paper with painter's tape, painting simple moth designs, experimenting with colors and patterns, and finishing with a soft watercolor background. Students are encouraged to invent their own moth variations — different wing shapes, color combinations, and patterns.

• Watercolor paper
• Watercolor paints
• Watercolor paintbrushes
• Water jar
• Paper towels

ABOUT THE 4TH GRADE PATHWAY
This lesson is part of Blackwing Foundation's 4th Grade Pathway — a sequential watercolor curriculum of free video lessons built specifically for 4th-grade students. Each lesson develops watercolor technique, composition, and exposure to major artists in a way that's age-appropriate for nine- and ten-year-olds. Every lesson is aligned with California State Standards and National Core Arts Standards for 4th grade. We also offer pathways for Grades 1, 2, 3, 5, and 6 in art, plus separate pathways in handwriting and lettering. Find the right fit for your classroom at blackwingfoundation.org.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Allyson Reynolds is a contemporary Australian watercolor artist celebrated for her delicate, intricate paintings of moths, butterflies, and other flying insects. She uses watercolor's natural transparency and softness to capture the fragile beauty of creatures most of us overlook. Her paintings invite viewers to slow down and look closely at the wonders of the natural world. Reynolds shows kids that small subjects — a single moth wing, a quiet creature in flight — can become beautiful watercolor art.
