#SCOSoundbites – Stairway to Heaven Concert: CONFLUENCE – SCO China Concert Tour 2024 Homecoming Concert Date: 6 Jul 2024 Composed by Luo Maishuo Pipa: Yu Jia There are many divine trees in classical Chinese mythology. The most well-known ones being Fusang, Jianmu, and Ruomu, which as legends have it, grow respectively in the east, central, and west of China. The similarity of these divine trees to Yggdrasill, a divine tree in Norse cosmology, reveals the common paradigm and conception of the world across different cultures. Such a pattern reflects how early civilisations perceived nature and the universalityof their worldviews, captured in the form of myths. Divine trees are imbued with various features and functions. The Bronze Tree of Sanxingdui is a composite of several divine trees, such as Fusang and Jianmu, and one of its main roles is to extend its reach to Heaven. This concerto depicts the awe inspired by the Sanxingdui tree from various aspects. The five movements come together to celebrate the tree’s significance as the heart of the world, alluding to the Ancient Shu people’s reverence of the sun and their longing to ascend to the heavens. Hence, the Sanxingdui tree is also referred to as the Stairway to Heaven. The movements of the concerto are named, respectively: I. Sun and Moon: The Sun and Moon are primordial forces worshiped by our early ancestors, the forces of creation, and the rulers of the world! II. Divine Tree: A towering and majestic tree standing between Heaven and Earth, emitting a warm glow. III. Golden Crow: Legend has it that there are ten sunbirds on the divine tree, each one representing a sun. A bird, bearing a sun, flies across the sky every day, completing a cycle every ten days. IV. Reaching to Heaven: A very special person, a wielder of mystical powers and a messenger of the gods – that is the priest. V. Auspicious Dragon: A totem of the Chinese people, a power beast that can scale the heavens and shake the earth, a guardian of the Chinese civilisation! The Sanxingdui Divine Tree is a great embodiment of Chinese cosmological beliefs and a physical relic from centuries past. It can be seen as a vivid portrayal of the mythical consciousness of our forebears, showing us how they thought about the contact, harmony, and interconnections between heaven and humankind.
