On the day after Thanksgiving in 1989, 18-year-old Mandy Stavik went for a run near her home on Strand Road in Acme, Washington, with her German Shepherd, Kyra. The dog came home. Mandy didn’t. Three days later, she was found in the South Fork of the Nooksack River. For 28 years, the Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office tested dozens of men from the area for DNA. None matched. Then a man who had lived along her running route in 1989 refused to give a sample, and he was careful never to leave his trash behind. Until a coworker at the Franz Bakery outlet pulled a plastic cup and a Coke can from the breakroom trash. The DNA matched. In 2019, Timothy Bass was convicted of first-degree felony murder and sentenced to nearly 27 years in prison. This is the story of Mandy Stavik: who she was, the detective who wouldn’t quit, and the ordinary people who finally got her justice. 🔔 Subscribe to Case Left Cold for more cold cases that finally got their answer. 💬 Would you have given your DNA?
