This is a slow, sad waltz written by well-known country songwriter Cindy Walker. However good Jo Stafford was doing regular pop songs, she was just the best at torch songs. Released May 3, 1954, “Thank You For Calling” made #12 on both Billboard and Cashbox. It reached #1 in New Orleans and top-10 in Chicago (#5 on WCFL), Dallas, Nashville, New York City, Cincinnati, Oakland, Pittsburgh, St. Louis and a slew of other cities. One interesting thing about this song is the operator breaking in at the end of the call. Back in 1954, most people did their calling through an operator, before the rotary dial system was widespread. You'd pick up the phone and get -- not a dial tone -- a voice from a woman asking, "Number, please?" She would then dial it from her switchboard. You never knew if she was still listening in to your call. In this case, it seems she was....
