Upgrading to Kelford 208-B performance cams in the Toyota
3UZ-FE V8 — and the step most guides skip entirely:
correctly removing the OEM scissor gear sprockets and
transferring them to the new camshafts without damaging
the spring-loaded assembly.
The Kelford 208-B runs 264/258 degrees of advertised
duration with 9.60mm/9.50mm lift — a fast road profile
designed to work with the stock head casting and suit
upgraded intake and exhaust. On a tuneable ECU, these
cams are a clean performance step that doesn't sacrifice
streetability.
But before any of that matters, the scissor gear has
to go on correctly. This video covers the full process.
💡 WHAT IS THE SCISSOR GEAR?
The 3UZ-FE uses a spring-loaded dual-gear (scissor)
assembly on the camshaft drive sprockets to eliminate
backlash and gear noise. Unlike a conventional single
gear, the scissor arrangement uses a secondary preloaded
gear to take up any play in the timing chain drive.
When fitting aftermarket cams, this assembly must be
carefully disassembled and transferred — the spring
preload has to be maintained correctly or you'll get
timing noise and potential wear issues.
