What if asking the right question could change the direction of your research?
In this episode of Voices from the Field, I sit down with Dr. Jianzhou He at Georgia Southern University’s Armstrong Campus in Savannah for a conversation that goes beyond the technical side of environmental research.
Dr. He shares his journey into research, including how a professor helped him discover his direction as a student. We also discuss environmental contaminants, PFAS (“forever chemicals”), interdisciplinary research, and the importance of giving students opportunities to experience real research.
One message stood out throughout our conversation:
“Ask good questions.”
As Dr. He explains, research doesn't always begin with knowing the answer. It begins with curiosity, questions, exploration, and the willingness to discover where those questions lead.
Topics we discuss:
Dr. He's journey into environmental research
Why environmental contaminants matter
PFAS and their presence in everyday products
Interdisciplinary collaboration
Microplastics research
What students gain from real research
Research beyond the classroom
Communicating research and attending conferences
Advice for aspiring environmental researchers
Thank you to Dr. Jianzhou He for taking the time to share his story, experience, and perspective.
