A polar bear mother and her two small cubs stand on a sheet of ice that is breaking apart. She has not eaten for eight months. Behind her, a male twice her size is walking in her tracks. In front of her, the ice she needs to hunt on is turning into open sea.
Follow one polar bear family through a single summer on Svalbard, the islands halfway between Norway and the North Pole. Siku leaves her snow den in March with two cubs born in the polar night. She hunts ringed seal pups under the snow of the frozen fjords, runs from a hungry male to the glacier front, turns back from a beach of tusked walruses, and swims to land with a cub on her back when the sea ice breaks up in July. Then the long wait on the hungry land begins, until the sea freezes again.

Animals in this film: polar bear (Ursus maritimus), ringed seal (Pusa hispida), bearded seal (Erignathus barbatus), Atlantic walrus (Odobenus rosmarus rosmarus), arctic fox (Vulpes lagopus), Svalbard reindeer (Rangifer tarandus platyrhynchus), beluga (Delphinapterus leucas), little auk (Alle alle), black-legged kittiwake (Rissa tridactyla), barnacle goose (Branta leucopsis), common eider (Somateria mollissima), ivory gull (Pagophila eburnea), Svalbard rock ptarmigan.
The story is built from real behaviour and research on Svalbard's polar bears: denning, seal hunting, males that kill cubs, long swims between ice and land, and bears that now spend more of the summer ashore as the sea ice shrinks. Siku is a name we gave to tell it.
Filmed with licensed wildlife footage. A few scenes that no camera has caught this close, such as the mother charging the male, were created with AI tools and are marked as altered content.
