Icescape, Op. 3, Tableau for Harp and Piano Jane Jessamine Bongiorno, composer & harpist Rose Jerusha Whitmore, pianist Artistic note: The beautiful ice sounds heard in the background of this piece were recorded by Jonna Jinton and are used with permission. Icescape was inspired by her video, “Song of the Ice,” linked below! ➛    • Song of the ice | 10 HOURS raw ice sounds ...   ⛸️ In like fashion to Weeping Willow--my Sonata-Fantasy in D Minor--this piece also requires extended technique: a compositional device that expands an instrument beyond traditional use, and in ways that might feel a bit unexpected. The piano part here, in particular, has a little extra spice--for example, the pianist scrapes the piano strings to mimic the sound of ice singing. Which leads me to the (arguably) most important aspect of this piece: The concept for Icescape was inspired by my favorite Swedish artist, Jonna Jinton, who lives in the north of Sweden, surrounded by her forest. Every winter, the lake beside her house freezes over--and when it does, it sings. She calls this magic the "singing ice" and she captures the ice song for us to hear. The ice on this lake makes incredible sounds that feel just utterly ancient, and the singing ice is something emblematic of a long-lost memory that captivates your very bones. Thank you--from the very bottom of my heart--to Jonna Jinton and her team in Sweden for giving me permission to publish this original composition with her ice sounds playing in the background. It's a privilege to get to share this with you. 🤍 Watch Jonna's Video, "Song of the Ice" here! ➛    • Song of the ice | 10 HOURS raw ice sounds ...   ❄️ © 2026 Jane Jessamine Bongiorno.
