This sacred hymn, from the Rig Veda, is the Devi Sukta: the song of the Goddess herself. Revealed by Vak Ambhrini, the female sage, it is the only hymn in the Vedas where the Divine speaks in the first person. Where the Sarva Mangala invokes the Mother's blessing, this chant is the Mother declaring her own power.
It is the mantra of the sovereign feminine:
Aham rudrebhir vasubhish charami - I move with the Rudras and the Vasus
Aham adityair uta vishvadevaih - I move with the Adityas and all the gods
Aham mitra varunobha bibharmi - I support both Mitra and Varuna
Aham indragni aham ashvinobha - I support Indra and Agni, and the twin Ashvins
Aham rashtri sangamani vasunam - I am the Queen, gathering all treasures
Chikitushi prathama yajniyanam - the first of all who offer worship
Tam ma deva vyadadhuh purutra - the gods placed me in many places
Bhuristhatram bhury aveshayantim - entering many dwellings
Aham somam ahanasam bibharmi - I hold Soma, the drink of life
Aham tvashtaram uta pushanam bhagam - I hold Tvashtar, Pushan and Bhaga
Aham dadhami dravinam havishmate - I give wealth to the one who offers
Supravye yajamanaya sunvate - to the generous sacrificer who presses the juice
Mayaa so annam atti yo vipashyati - through me all who see eat food
Yah praniti ya im shrinoty uktam - all who breathe and hear what is spoken
Amantavo mam ta upa kshiyanti - those who do not know me waste away
Shrudhi shruta shraddhivam te vadami - hear, O heard one, I speak to you with faith
Aham eva svayam idam vadami - I alone declare this myself
Jushtam devebhir uta manushebhih - beloved by gods and by humans
Yam kamaye tam tam ugram krinomi - whom I love, I make powerful
Tam brahmanam tam rishim tam sumedham - that one a brahmin, a rishi, a sage
Aham rudraya dhanur a tanomi - I draw the bow for Rudra
Brahmadvishe sharave hantava u - to slay the hater of sacred knowledge
Aham janaya samadam krinomi - I make war among the peoples
Aham dyavaprithivi avivesha - I have entered heaven and earth
Aham suve pitaram asya murdhan - I give birth to the father on this head
Mama yonir apsv antah samudre - my womb is in the waters, in the ocean
Tato vi tishthe bhuvan anu vishva - from there I spread through all worlds
Utamum dyam varshmanopa sprishami - and touch that heaven with my stature
Aham eva vata iva pravami - I blow forth like the wind
Arabhamana bhuvanani vishva - embracing all the worlds
Paro diva para ena prithivya - beyond heaven, beyond this earth
Etavati mahina sam babhuva - so great is my majesty
Aham rashtri sangamani vasunam - I am the Queen, gathering all treasures
Om - the sound of all that is, fading into silence
When to listen:
During Navaratri, to honor the nine nights of the Goddess
When you need to remember your own power and sovereignty
When you feel small, silenced, or unseen
To connect with the sacred feminine within and around you
It is not a distant goddess speaking. It is the voice inside you, remembering what it has always been.
The oldest knowledge on Earth is still here.
