Stephen King’s IT is terrifying, disturbing, bizarre, and far stranger than any of its film adaptations have been able to show us. Because Pennywise isn’t really IT. At its heart, IT confronts us with something the human mind simply cannot comprehend. Pennywise the Dancing Clown is a mask. The monsters are masks. Even the spider-like creature the Losers encounter beneath Derry is only their minds struggling to give recognizable form to something fundamentally alien. And that presents a nearly impossible challenge for anyone trying to adapt IT for the screen: How do you show an audience something that is terrifying precisely because it cannot be seen, understood, or described? That is cosmic horror. If you’ve read the novel, I’d love to know what moments disturbed or fascinated you the most. And if you have other favorite examples of cosmic horror in literature, share them in the comments. 00:00 Intro 02:15 What is Cosmic Horror? 04:28 Stanley Uris Gets Offended 09:24 The Deadlights 11:38 The Macroverse 16:02 Turtle Power 23:24 There is No Spider! 27:33 Cosmic Horror Can’t Be Filmed
