Here’s a strange fact about emotional control: the more directly you try to control a feeling, the more control it tends to have over you. Tell yourself to stop being anxious, and your attention locks onto the anxiety. About a hundred years ago, a Japanese psychiatrist named Shoma Morita built an entire approach around this observation, now known as Morita therapy. His answer is surprising. You can’t control your feelings directly. But you can control something else, and that turns out to be far more useful. In this video, three ideas from Morita’s approach: why fighting a feeling feeds it, because the struggle adds a second layer of suffering on top of the original feeling; arugamama, the Japanese idea of letting things be as they are, treating feelings like weather that comes and passes on its own timetable; and why controlling your actions instead of your feelings changes what you do tomorrow, by doing the next small useful thing while the feeling is still there. A quick honest note: Morita therapy is a real clinical approach, but this video is a short introduction to its ideas, not therapy or medical advice. If your emotions feel overwhelming, persistent, or are affecting your daily life, please talk to a qualified professional. ⏱ Timestamps: 0:00 - Why controlling a feeling makes it stronger 0:50 - Idea 1: Fighting a feeling feeds it 2:40 - Idea 2: Arugamama, let it be as it is 4:30 - Idea 3: Control your actions, not your feelings 6:20 - How to use this today If this gave you a different way to relate to your own feelings, subscribe.
