A retired trucker who drove from 1975 to 2015 tells stories from his later years on the road, the nineties and the early two thousands. The trucks were newer, the truck stops were brighter, and the roads were busier, but some nights the road still had something waiting for him right out in the open. In this episode: 1991, Oklahoma. An old preacher in a truck stop chapel prays for him by name. 1990, Nebraska. A farmer plows the field next to the truck stop at night with a team of horses. 1992, Arkansas. Biscuit shares cherry pie with an old couple on their second honeymoon. 1993, Indiana. A detour leads him through a town that isn't on any map. 1995, Tennessee. A waitress writes on Moonpie's check: you're not alone in your truck. 1994, Georgia. A woman in a white nightgown stands in the median waiting for her trucker husband. 1994, Iowa. The music and lights of an old-time barn dance in a barn that burned down in 1959. 1996, Nebraska. A fourth man in a yellow slicker stands in the steam at a truck wash. 1997, Wisconsin. A snowman on his hood wears the scarf his mother knitted for him as a boy. 1998, Arkansas. A red ball rolls into the street at 2 AM, and then rolls back. 1999, Mississippi. A wedding dress in a pine tree moves closer to the road every week. 2000, Missouri. An old woman pushes a shopping cart through a locked store at 3 AM. 2001, Kansas. An old woman at a rest area pours him his grandmother's coffee and tells him to go home. 2002, Ohio. A little boy asks him to help find his daddy's truck. 2002, Wyoming. On Thanksgiving, one more driver sits down at the table than anybody counted. 2003, Ohio. During the great blackout, one farmhouse has a candle in every window. 2004, across the South. Junior is followed for three states by an old station wagon. 2007, Oklahoma. Momma T sees her husband waving on the shoulder while he sleeps in the bunk behind her. 2005, Alabama. He follows a funeral procession at 2 AM to a cemetery nobody uses anymore. 2006, Kentucky. Smitty's eggs at a roadside stand come with notes from the farmer. 2007, Oklahoma. The night before his daughter's wedding, an old woman with his mother's brooch sits down next to him. 2008, Colorado. A stranger in a red and black coat buys his coffee and says, congratulations, Grandpa. This is a work of fiction inspired by the real culture of American trucking. Names, handles and events are fictional. If you enjoy these stories, subscribe so you don't miss the next one. And if you drove in the 90s or 2000s, tell us in the comments.
