Why do you over explain yourself, even when nobody asked for the reasons? Here's where the habit really comes from, and how to stop at one reason. Someone asks for a hand on Saturday, and a simple no turns into a three-part story. You're ten minutes late, and they get the full traffic report. Someone offers you a biscuit, and you end up explaining your whole week of eating. A short, clear answer usually reads as confident. A long, cushioned one tends to read as unsure, or even guilty, when you've done nothing wrong. In this episode we look at over explaining as part of the fawn response: building a full defence for a case nobody has opened. We look at where the habit is often learned (a household, a relationship or a job where a plain no wasn't safe), why it made sense at the time, and why it keeps running in rooms where you don't need it anymore. I also share a moment on holiday when I felt myself about to over explain a simple yes-or-no question, and what happened instead. Then the practical part: the one reason rule, why more reasons invite more argument, and how to sit with the silence after you've said no. 🎥 Related episodes: People Pleasing Isn't Kindness — It's Quiet Leaving:    • People Pleasing Isn't Kindness — It's Quie...   You've Been Setting Boundaries ALL WRONG - Here's Why:    • You've Been Setting Boundaries ALL WRONG -...   High Functioning Anxiety — Why Looking Calm Doesn't Mean You're Okay:    • High Functioning Anxiety — Why Looking Cal...   ✨ Work With Me: For bespoke 1-to-1 coaching, contact: info@coachingwithmichelle.co.uk Chapters: 0:00 Why do you over explain yourself? 0:21 The favour, the late arrival and the biscuit 1:59 Fight, flight, freeze… and fawn 2:42 Building a case nobody opened 4:41 Where over explaining is learned 5:24 Controlling how you're seen 6:35 Do you mind if I smoke here? 9:07 No can be a complete sentence 9:49 Why more reasons invite more argument 10:10 The one reason rule 11:38 Practise somewhere small 12:38 Close your mouth and let the silence sit 13:26 You don't owe anyone a trial #overexplaining #peoplepleasing #sayingno
