Revival - The Phenomena of Revival | Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones | Part 11

Is this the Holy Spirit - or human excitement? How should Christians respond when unusual things happen during revival? In the eleventh sermon of his Revival series, Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones examines Acts 2:12-13, where the outpouring of the Holy Spirit prompted amazement, perplexity and mockery. Considering accounts of deep emotion, physical reactions, visions and extraordinary gifts of speech, Lloyd-Jones examines attempts to explain revival as brainwashing, mass hysteria, psychic activity or the work of the devil. He argues that these explanations fail to account for the origin and spiritual fruit of genuine revival. His appeal is for biblical discernment: unusual experiences are not essential to revival and must never become our goal. Christians must test the spirits, recognise counterfeits and guard against excess, while taking care not to quench the Holy Spirit. What we should seek is the glory of God, the salvation of sinners and a mighty outpouring of His Spirit. 📌 THEMES • The unusual experiences that sometimes accompany revival • Amazement, doubt and mockery at Pentecost • Emotional and physical responses to God’s power • Revival and the limitations of naturalistic explanations • Testing the spirits and recognising counterfeits • Why manifestations must never become our goal • Seeking God’s glory without quenching the Holy Spirit 📖 SCRIPTURES Main passage: Acts 2:12-13 Other passages discussed or referred to: Acts 2:1-21; Joel 2:28-32; Luke 11:14-18; 1 John 4:1-3; Acts 10:9-16; Acts 16:6-10; Acts 22:17-21; 1 Corinthians 12-14; 2 Peter 1:20-21; 1 Thessalonians 5:19-21. 🎙️ SERMON DETAILS Original title: The Phenomena of Revival Preacher: Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones Series: Revival | Part 11 Preached: 22 March 1959 MLJ Trust catalogue reference: RV11 Original sermon and further resources: [The Phenomena of Revival - MLJ Trust](https://www.mljtrust.org/sermon/the-p...)
