Washington state paid approximately $537 million in lawsuit payouts during the last fiscal year, raising new questions about taxpayer costs, child welfare failures and the state's approach to tort reform.
A Washington advisory committee is finalizing recommendations aimed at reducing government liability, but critics argue the process has focused too heavily on limiting payouts rather than preventing abuse and neglect.
State Rep. Darya Farivar raised concerns about the committee's direction and whether its membership complies with Washington's Nothing About Us Without Us Act, which emphasizes including people with lived experience in state advisory groups.
Leah Griffin and Kelly Carson of the Washington State Association for Justice criticized the process, arguing that abuse survivors and other victims have not been adequately represented.
Gov. Bob Ferguson's office maintains that the committee's membership complies with the legislative requirements.
Five committee members also prepared a minority report calling for greater emphasis on preventing harm, particularly childhood abuse and neglect involving people under state supervision.
The controversy comes as lawmakers consider how to address Washington's mounting lawsuit costs and improve accountability within state agencies, including the Department of Children, Youth, and Families (DCYF).
