Gemmiweg Leukerbad Switzerland Ascent Special Path & Fantastic View: https://s.geo.admin.ch/hfigc2bqoyzw
The historic Gemmi Trail is one of the most spectacular mountain trails in Switzerland and connects Leukerbad in Valais directly to the Gemmi Pass on the border with the canton of Bern. Although the trail is impressive and was blasted into an almost vertical rock face—as if by some “bad joke”—it is very well maintained, secured throughout, and technically manageable for hikers with sure footing.
Key tour details at a glance
• Starting point: Gemmi Cable Car valley station in Leukerbad (approx. 1,383 m above sea level)
• Destination: Gemmi Pass / Gemmi Cable Car mountain station (2,320 m above sea level)
• Distance: approx. 4.6 kilometers
• Duration: about 2 hours (walking time for the ascent only)
• Elevation gain: approx. 970 meters on the ascent
• Difficulty: T2 to T3 (mountain hiking; moderately difficult technically, but physically demanding and very steep).
Route Description & Nature of the Hike
I recommend starting the hike early in the morning. The trail begins quite gently through a shaded forest near the Gemmi Railway valley station. As soon as you leave the forest, you’ll find yourself standing directly in front of the massive rock face.
From here, the historic mule trail (built in the 18th century) winds steeply upward in countless tight switchbacks. The trail offers a breathtaking view down toward Leukerbad, and with every meter of elevation gain, the panorama of the Valais 4,000-meter peaks (such as the Matterhorn, Weisshorn, and Dom) opens up. In exposed sections, the trail is always secured with railings, so no actual climbing is required.
Be careful in the sun: The south-facing slope traps heat extremely well—on sunny days, the rock radiates heat like an oven. Be sure to bring plenty of water (at least 2 liters) and good sunscreen.
The alternative route back
Once you reach the top, the rugged landscape suddenly transforms into a vast high plateau where the picturesque Daubensee lake lies. If you want to give your knees a break after the nearly 1,000 meters of elevation gain, you can take the Gemmi Cable Car for a relaxing, 6-minute ride back down to Leukerbad.
The “Gemmi Challenge”
For athletic runners, there’s a special adventure: Anyone who completes the ascent from the valley station to the mountain station within a certain time frame between July and October will be rewarded:
• Men: under 60 minutes
• Women: under 65 minutes
The prize: A free ride down the valley on the Gemmi Cable Car, as well as free admission to the Leukerbad Therme on the same day for the perfect recovery.
