I Never Realized Trains Were This Interesting

I already liked trains… but I had no idea just how specialized rail cars actually get. From passenger cars and rolling restaurants to autoracks carrying actual cars, double-stacked freight containers, enormous heavy-haul equipment and tank cars carrying everyday products, this sent me much further down the railway rabbit hole than I expected. As someone from Finland, some of the passenger-train ideas felt familiar—but other parts completely caught me off guard. The deeper we got into freight cars and railroad maintenance equipment, the more I realized that almost everything you see on a railway seems to have a very specific reason for being designed the way it is.
