Some skyscrapers actually use massive amounts of moving water to help control how much the building sways—and I had absolutely no idea this was happening above people's heads.
As a Finn who already finds extremely tall pencil towers slightly terrifying, learning how engineers deal with wind-induced movement was both fascinating and... not particularly helpful for my fear of living in one. 😅
In this reaction to Practical Engineering, I learn how tuned liquid column dampers and sloshing dampers use water to counter unwanted building movement. The demonstrations genuinely made the engineering much easier to understand, but they also left me with one question for everyone who actually lives or works high up in a skyscraper: do you eventually stop thinking about the building moving?
💬 If you've lived or worked high up in a skyscraper, have you ever actually noticed it sway?
