The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde–A Book Club Podcast 📚 Part 2: Chapters 6-10 (Sept 15) (Sorry For Audio/Tech Issues) 📚✨🎭 In which we discuss: ✨🎭📚 ✨ On Chapter 6✨ 1) 1:30–Harry's Philosophy–again. Bro just DOESN'T shut up. Is Harry a Hypocrite? Is he Sincere or just a wordy conundrum? Basil thinks he's good, Harry says nah . . . but what say you? Is he responsible for Dorian's downfall? (This gets brought up a lot) 2) 6:33–Sybil as a counterbalance to Harry's perspective . . . but we also debate whether Dorian actually CAN be influenced, or whether he just goes with the influence that tells him what he already wants to hear. Because Dorian will Dorian. Does Dorian want to be evil? Would Dorian have corrupted himself without Harry's help? Or is Harry to blame for the fall of Dorian? (We have strong opinions) 3) 11:19–Discussion on "what is goodness." We dive deep into Harry's one constant philosophy, which resembles Polonius: "The thine own's [nature] be true] . . . do we agree? We also discuss how much we love Harry and Basil's discussions with each other, and how they remind us of Rosencranz and Guildenstern in their discussion of Hedonistic philosophy. We also discuss the loss of Dorian's soul and how the poor always seem to pay for the sins of the rich. ✨ On Chapter 7✨ 3) 16:19-25:23–A quick summary of this crazy, sad chapter in the book, and in a lot of people's lives IN this book –The beginning of the corruption of Dorian Gray's soul, which commences with his convincing Basil and Harry to see Sybil's play–and the dangers of talking up someone too much 4) 18:09–A very brief discussion on Anti-semitism in Victorian England 5) 20:38–The arrival at the theater and a brief discussion on why we don't think Dorian is very sophisticated in his knowledge of the arts. (I also nerd out a little bit on Shakespeare, but that's neither here nor there 👀) 6) 24:05– On Sybil's terrible acting and Dorian's subsequent procuring of "the ick." We discuss his break up with her and why, while getting the ick is ok, his treatment of her is SOOOOOO not. We also spend some time discussion how much you can learn from the flowers, like the foreshadowing of the death of a poor little actress from the wrong side of the tracks. ✨ On Chapter 8 ✨ 7) ✨ On Chapter 9 ✨ ✨ On Chapter 10 ✨ We will be discussing the following chapters for these episode dates: Episode 1: Chapters 1-3 (Monday, August 24) Episode 2: Chapters 4-10 (Monday, September 14) Episode 3: Chapters 11-13 (Monday, September 28) Episode 4: Chapters 14-17 (Monday, October 12) Epsiode 5: Chapters 18-20 (Monday, October 26)
