Before you can secure, troubleshoot, or build anything in a modern data center, you need to understand the trick that runs almost all of it. Virtualization takes one physical server and turns it into many independent machines, and once you see how that works, a lot of IT and security suddenly makes more sense.
In this first lesson we start with the core idea of abstraction, meet the hypervisor, and look at why companies were wasting roughly 90 percent of their server capacity before virtualization came along. From there we walk through the main types of virtualization, the big shift where servers stop being boxes and start being files, and the honest trade-offs: the benefits everyone talks about and the hidden costs people tend to skip over.
In this lesson:
What virtualization is and why abstraction is the core idea
What a hypervisor does and how it hands out CPU, memory, and storage
How idle hardware and server sprawl drove the move to virtualization
Server, desktop, storage, network, and application virtualization
Why a VM being "just a file" changes everything
Benefits like consolidation and isolation versus costs like overhead and noisy neighbors
