Lying Cop Gets an Innocent Couple Killed — Then His Lie Costs Him 60 Years!

I'm Walter Briggs, and today we're unpacking the Houston felony murder trial of former narcotics officer Gerald Goines. Today's case is the Harris County felony murder trial of former Houston police officer Gerald Goines, tied to the January 28, 2019 raid on 7815 Harding Street. Prosecutors said Goines invented a confidential informant and a heroin purchase to obtain a no-knock warrant. The judge who signed it later said much of the warrant was untrue. That same day, Dennis Tuttle and Rhogena Nicholas were killed in their home, along with their dog. Goines never fired a shot, so felony murder turned on causation. In opening statements, the defense conceded he lied in the affidavit. It argued the couple would not have died had they complied, and that Tuttle fired first. Prosecutors answered that the liar who set everything in motion was responsible. Testimony also covered heroin allegedly taken from Goines's car and a body camera shut off on the chief's instruction. After about seven hours of deliberation, jurors found Goines guilty on two counts of felony murder. They then sentenced him to 60 years and a $10,000 fine on each count, served concurrently.
