delay — the fourth track, after init, loop and filter, made the same way. One delay makes this track. In the DELAY scene the lead plays only straight 8th notes, and the delay sends each one back three 16ths later, right, then left, so every 16th in between is an echo (the Edge's dotted-eighth trick). In the groove the lead plays a short call and rests, and the delay answers it. The chord, an open hat and the clap on 4 are thrown into the same delay, and every echo comes back a little darker and a little worn, like tape. In the break the kick and bass stop; the chord is held under its own echoes. In the rise the delay time halves every bar (352 → 234 → 117 → 59 ms) and the feedback goes past 1, until the half beat of silence empties it. In the drop each echo of the call comes back higher — a fifth, an octave, then up to three octaves. In the middle scenes the picture is put through the same delay where it helps you see it: past frames come back right, then left, as strong as the echo. No samples, no DAW, no AI audio model: every sound is a few lines of Python, and one score drives both the sound and the picture.
How it's made
every sound: synthesized sample by sample in Python (numpy)
the delay: a ping-pong feedback delay, 352 ms, a low-pass, a high-pass and a soft limiter in the loop; its feedback and delay time written into the score every 16th note
the picture's echoes (middle scenes): frames drawn again from the score at t − 352 ms, t − 704 ms …, with the same feedback
the tape: wow and flutter on the delay time, a little saturation on every pass
reverb and the final compressor: Spotify's open-source Pedalboard
the picture: drawn frame by frame in JavaScript (Canvas) from the same score
composed with Claude (an AI coding assistant); a human producer chose the sounds, the build and the edits
128 BPM · D minor · Dm9 – Gm9 – Bbmaj9 – A7sus4
0:00 delay(): the kick, one chord, its first echoes
0:15 one sound at a time: hat, bass, clap, the delay
0:30 groove: a call, and the delay answers
0:45 kick = None: the chord held under its echoes → the rise: 352 → 59 ms, feedback past 1
1:00 drop(): the delay, clean again
1:15 ECHO in dots, then the countdown closing the echoes
1:30 end
